The Monterrey-Madrid route started operations today

connecting passengers and cargo directly from the capital of the State of Nuevo Leon with the Spanish city.

As part of the celebration of this landmark moment for Monterrey and the region, the local authorities, together with Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA) and Aeromexico executives, cut the inaugural ribbon and performed the traditional aircraft water salute.

This new route will connect nonstop one of the most important cities in the country with the Old Continent. The decision represents a 43% increase in Aeromexico’s offer to Spain through 20 weekly flights from Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.

“I thank the Government of Nuevo Leon, OMA and each of my colleagues at Aeromexico. We have been connecting Monterrey for more than four decades and this route that we are opening today allows us to take our customers and cargo not only from Monterrey, but also from the north of the country to the main gateway to Europe,” said José A. Zapata, Aeromexico’s Mexico Sales and JCA Vice President.

“With the launch of this route, Monterrey consolidates its position as the hub for the northern part of the country and strengthens the expansion project of up to 7,000 million pesos that we are investing in this airport,” said Ricardo Dueñas, Chief Executive Officer of OMA.

Monterrey Airport offers connectivity to 30 domestic and 12 international destinations, providing direct access to important destinations in Mexico, the United States, Canada and Panama. Today, this new service is added to the European market, positioning Monterrey as the main air hub in northern Mexico.

“I am delighted that Nuevo Leon continues to lead by example. Today we are pleased to welcome 290 passengers from Madrid. It has been proven in the world, where you build airports, you not only generate flights, you generate revenue, transportation, cargo and tourism. This land should be the northern Mexico air hub and these actions are the first step”, said Samuel Garcia Sepulveda, Constitutional Governor of the State of Nuevo Leon.

As part of this celebration, Aeromexico offered a special menu in its Premier Lounges, with a selection of tapas and the traditional Spanish omelet.

With this new route, the airline has an offering of nearly 143,000 seats per month to connect the city of Monterrey.
