The Latin America Air Transport sector in the post COVID-19 era: Resilience and efficiency through Leadership and Cooperation

Hermes – Air Transport Organisation and Aeronautica Civil de Colombia co-organised an insightful online event regarding the issues, challenges and opportunities which may arise, on the Latin American Air Transport market, in the post COVID-19 era. The panel consisted of a great variety of aviation stakeholders, who shared their opinions regarding the needed actions which will provide resilience and efficiency to the industry through mutual efforts and initiatives. ALTA TRAFFIC REPORT, MAY 2020

On this occasion, we present the Traffic Report for May 2020, which, as we announced, keeps the same trend recorded in April, showing a 95.8% drop in passenger traffic compared to May 2019. This percentage shows that throughout the past May, fewer passengers traveled in the region in comparison with any given day in May 2019. About 1.5 million passengers were carried from, to and within Latin America and the Caribbean, representing a decrease of 33.5 million passengers over the previous year. As in April, during May only the Mexican, Chilean, and Brazilian markets were operational and these recorded decreases above 90% in passenger traffic. ALTA TRAFFIC REPORT, MARCH 2020

Panama, May 13, 2020 – The Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) announces that airlines operating the Latin America and Caribbean market carried 31.1 million passengers in March, down 17.5% – or 6,600,845 less passengers – from the previous year. Traffic (RPK) decreased 22.9% and capacity (ASK) decreased 11.7%, bringing the load factor to 71.9%, 10.4 percentage points lower than in 2019. (see table 1). Traffic to/from Latin America & Caribbean 10.4 million passengers travelled to and from Latin America and the Caribbean in March, a decrease of 23.6% from the previous year (see table 2). Panama, April 14, 2020 – The Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) announces that Latin America and Caribbean airlines carried 24.2 million passengers in February, up 4.5% – or 1,049,391 additional passengers – from the previous year. Traffic (RPK) increased 2.6% and capacity (ASK) increased 4.7%, bringing the load factor to 79%, 1.6 percentage points lower than in 2019. (see table 1). The Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) announced today that Latin America and Caribbean airlines carried 27.7 million passengers in January, up 3.5% – or 928,053 additional passengers – from the previous year. Traffic (RPK) increased 0.1% and capacity (ASK) increased 1.2%, bringing the load factor to 79.6%, 0.9 percentage points lower than in 2019.
