  • Lima is the venue for this key international aviation meeting
ALTA NEWS - ALTA Aviation Safety, Flight Ops & Training Summit: the premier safety & training summit for aviation in Latin America and the Caribbean

2023 was recorded as the safest year in the history of civil aviation. Latin America and the Caribbean had zero fatalities in commercial aviation and, globally, the fatality risk decreased significantly, from 0.11 in 2022 to 0.03 in 2023, a sharp improvement vs. the average of the last five years.

These data confirm that civil aviation is the safest mean of transport, thanks to the entire industry maintaining safety as its core value. This commitment is reflected in the continuous evaluation of operations, the adoption of more efficient and effective technologies and the comprehensive training of personnel both on the ground and in the air. It is also reflected in the sharing of experiences and best practices among operators, who collaborate strongly in this sense, which is essential to keep the skies safe.

José Ricardo Botelho, Executive Director & CEO of the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), stresses that these statistics are the result of a joint effort by the entire industry: “The level of safety achieved by aviation equals that a person would have to travel by air every day for 103,239 years to experience a fatal accident. This solid progress comes from a robust safety culture focused on progressive improvement.”

In this sense, Lima, the capital of Peru, becomes the core of the discussion and sharing of experiences that will further boost safety and operational effectiveness in aviation in the Latin American and Caribbean region. From June 18th to 20th, 2024, the ALTA Aviation Safety, Flight Ops & Training Summit will bring together industry leaders and experts in a set of educational panels, presentations and working sessions to continue to raise the standards of safety, ops and crew training in the region.

Starting this 2024, the summit takes on a new format featuring the successful Pilot Training Connect as an integral part of the conference, given the reception of its first edition held in September 2023 in Panama, setting a milestone in aircrew training in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

“Positive results in operational safety are only built with a strong culture, which encompasses training, technological implementation and operational effectiveness. That is why this year the event is being strengthened by bringing into the discussion all the experts on these issues, to share experiences and seek joint solutions that continue to keep our skies safe, that is what this summit that we will hold in Lima is all about, in a particularly timely space, since together -industry and authorities- we share the mission of providing the population with safety and effective response”, Botelho explains.

Thus, the ALTA Aviation Safety, Flight Ops & Training Summit 2024 will bring together Safety, Flight Ops & Pilot Training professionals, representatives from airlines, aircraft manufacturers, Civil Aviation Authorities, airports, air traffic control organizations, flight schools and other key industry players. The convergence of these experts ensures deep and meaningful discussions on crucial issues on safety and pilot training.

A rich agenda

A highlight of this year\’s agenda will be the participation of Pedro Algorta, one of the 16 survivors of the tragic plane crash in the Andes in 1972. His experience living 72 days in extreme conditions has shaped his view on leadership, teamwork and resilience in adverse situations. Algorta will share valuable lessons on survival and recovery, inspiring attendees with his story of overcoming adversity.

Similarly, the summit features a variety of sessions addressing crucial topics for the aviation industry, from safety culture to challenges in implementing new technologies and operational practices. Prominent speakers such as Don Enrique Rosende, VP Safety, Security & HSE of LATAM Airlines Group, and Robert L. Sumwalt, Executive Director of the Boeing Center for Aviation and Aerospace Safety at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, will share their experiences and expertise.

The academic agenda also features panels exploring EVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles) operations and the specific challenges of the Latin American and Caribbean region.

Furthermore, dedicated sessions will address critical issues such as human factors in aviation, including pilot mental health and fatigue, as well as the increasingly widespread use of flight training devices and best practices in aviation safety. Cutting-edge topics will also be addressed, such as the regional implementation of Evidence-Based Training (EBT) and Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) programs, which are transforming the way pilots are trained and their competencies are assessed. Expect an enriching sharing among participants and thoughtful reflection on the future of the industry from over 60 panelists.

This year\’s ALTA Aviation Safety, Flight Ops & Training Summit promises to be a must-attend meeting for all players in the aviation industry, having a diverse and relevant program, along with the participation of leading experts. To get to know the full agenda click here.
