The Airports Council International for Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC) presented the ACI-Green Airport Recognition Award to OPAIN, RIOGaleão, GAP, AERIS, CIBAO, BH Airport and Salvador Bahia Airport, airports in the region that stood out for implementing good socio-environmental practices that reduce the impacts of airport operations, during the gala dinner on the first day of the ACI-LAC 2022 Annual Assembly, Conference and Exhibition in Argentina on Monday.

The Green Airport Recognition Award aims to recognize and highlight the environmental performance of airports in Latin America and the Caribbean through projects in various areas of airport environmental management, such as waste management, energy efficiency, carbon emissions management and adaptation to climate change.

During the dinner, ACI-LAC made a special mention to the most innovative project in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation. The special recognition went to the Belo Horizonte Airport for its project: Innovation of the Air Conditioning System of the Belo Horizonte International Airport. The airport has an innovative, efficient and economical air conditioning system, consisting of two chilled water plants (CAG 1 and CAG 2), installed in passenger terminal 1 and passenger terminal 2. Both centers have thermal storage tanks, which are large tanks capable of storing a total of 4,002,000 liters of chilled water. All this new infrastructure and equipment installed in the cold water plants contributes to favoring the climate and the environment in a sustainable way.

The awarded projects of the night were the energy optimization of the air conditioning system at El Dorado/OPAIN Airport; the waste management project of RIOGaleão; the solar energy project of Guadalajara Airport, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico; the implementation of the energy management system of AERIS Holding Costa Rica; the AIC Photovoltaic Park at Cibao International Airport; the innovation of the air conditioning system at Belo Horizonte International Airport; and the accelerated composting of Salvador Bahia Airport.
