Measures implemented by NAV Portugal over the past years have led to a reduction in the company’s annual water consumption by more than 20%, representing a saving of three million liters of water each year – equivalent to the daily consumption of more than 22 thousand people.
Aware of the important role that companies have to play in responding to the climate emergency, NAV Portugal has intensified efforts to minimize the environmental impacts of its activities. And today, bearing in mind that the depletion of water resources is one of the main climate challenges affecting our country, the focus is on water consumption.
Thus, taking the last five years as a reference period, NAV Portugal managed to reduce annual consumption from over 16 thousand cubic meters recorded in 2019 to 12.9 thousand cubic meters consumed in 2023. A 21% cut which, compared to 2017, represents a 50% reduction – the company’s average consumption was around 25 thousand cubic meters between 2010 and 2017.
Among the most impactful measures taken by NAV Portugal to increase the efficiency of water resource utilization, are the improvement of management of automatic irrigation system operation times in the surrounding areas of the company’s main buildings, installation of humidity sensors in irrigation systems, which prevent watering when humidity is sufficient, and reduction of faucet flow rates in the company’s facilities. For the future, the replacement of existing species in landscaped areas with less water-demanding species is being considered, thus rehabilitating outdoor spaces in a more sustainable way.
However, NAV Portugal’s commitment to promoting efficiency has not been limited to water issues, also focusing on energy consumption and the use of other resources. Investment in the energy efficiency of facilities, elimination of single-use plastics consumption, and reduction of paper consumption have also contributed to improving the company’s environmental performance.
