  • Jorge Chávez Airport’s New Terminal Positions Peru as a Strategic Hub in Latin America

The city of Lima has been chosen to host two of the most important aviation events in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2025: ALTA Aviation Law Americas, to be held from September 17 to 19, and the ALTA AGM & Airline Leaders Forum, from October 19 to 21.

Both events – organized by the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) – will bring together senior airline executives, government authorities, manufacturers, airport operators, legal experts, and other key players in the aviation industry.

The agenda for ALTA Aviation Law Americas 2025 will address crucial topics shaping the legal and regulatory landscape of aviation in the region. Key issues include the impact of sanctions and economic shocks on the industry, legal challenges related to supply chain and infrastructure tensions, liability in cargo transport, regulatory developments in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), war risk, and the growing threat of cybersecurity. The legal future of artificial intelligence in aviation will also be explored, a topic that is redefining operational and regulatory standards.

The ALTA AGM will center on the theme: “Aviation in Latin America and the Caribbean at a Crossroads: Facing Challenges and Seizing Opportunities.” Panels, debates, and presentations will offer strategic and executive perspectives on the geopolitical and economic landscape, new costs and challenges related to fees and charges, growth and operational constraints due to infrastructure, AI, air safety, tourism, crisis management, sustainability, and air cargo.

In this context, the recent inauguration of the new passenger terminal at Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima marks a strategic milestone for regional connectivity. With a structure three times larger than the previous one and an initial capacity for 30 million passengers per year — expandable to 40 million by 2030 — the new facility positions Lima as one of Latin America’s main hubs.

The upgraded infrastructure — including two runways, a new control tower, and a cargo center — enhances logistical capacity and improves the passenger experience. The new terminal is expected to boost tourism, which grew by 29% in 2024, create opportunities for new operators, and contribute to the country’s economic development — directly reflecting the topics to be addressed at ALTA’s forums.

“The growth of the aviation sector in Peru is remarkable, and the modernization of its main airport clearly demonstrates the country’s commitment to developing air transport, a vital service for the Andean nation. We are excited to bring two high-level events to Lima — a vibrant, strategic city undergoing a major transformation. It will be a great opportunity to strengthen dialogue among industry leaders and advance regional integration,” said Peter Cerdá, CEO of ALTA.
