- Lima international airport handles approximately 1.2 million passengers on domestic flights and 780 thousand on international flights, with an estimated 15 thousand flights per month.
- In the following months, new international destinations such as Curitiba (Brazil), Montego Bay (Jamaica) and Rosario (Argentina) are expected to be opened.
July is a high season month for the airline industry in Peru, as the flow of flights and passengers tends to increase due to the national holiday celebrations (Fiestas Patrias). This month saw a 10% increase in flight traffic compared to the same month in 2023, and 2.1 million passengers were mobilized during this patriotic month.
Currently, around 1.2 million passengers are transported each month on domestic flights, and 780 thousand on international flights, with an average of 15 thousand flights per month. In addition, so far this year, the air supply presents new international and domestic destinations. Recently, new international departures have been inaugurated, such as: Lima-La Paz (Bolivia) and Lima-Pereira (Colombia), and domestic such as Lima-Huaraz.
“The opening of these new destinations expands the supply of markets and schedules, attracting new passengers looking to explore new places either as a final destination or connection. This represents a significant advance in air connectivity between Peru and other countries in the region, opening great opportunities for tourism, trade and cultural exchange. In the coming months, new markets such as Curitiba (Brazil), Montego Bay (Jamaica) and Rosario (Argentina) are scheduled to be opened,” informed Emilio Parada, Commercial Strategy and Marketing Manager of Lima Airport Partners (LAP).
It is important to note that, at the end of the first half of this year, passenger traffic has increased by 20%, compared to the same period in 2023, and by 12%, in relation to the number of flights. It is projected that, by the end of 2024, approximately 23.6 million passengers will have been transported, reaching the figure recorded in 2019, before the pandemic.
On the other hand, in view of the future operation of the new air terminal at Jorge Chavez Airport, it is expected to grow in new markets and increase the frequency of many existing destinations. Likewise, it is projected to transfer approximately 2.2 million passengers per month with an increasing trend. In this sense, after the first year of operation in the new terminal, it is expected to exceed pre-pandemic levels in both the international and domestic markets.
Finally, Parada said that Lima Airport Partners is working to have the new infrastructure in place by the end of this year, which will allow airlines to increase their portfolio of destinations and thus offer passengers new travel alternatives. As already informed by the concessionaire, the new air terminal is scheduled to start operations on December 18th of this year.
