Effective May 6, 2025, WestJet will accept new maximum carry-on baggage sizing to seamlessly align with common international cabin baggage dimensions adopted by other North American carriers and luggage manufacturers, including partner carrier, Delta Air Lines.
The new size maximums (22” x 14” x 9”) account for wheels and handles, offering peace of mind around what easily fits into the overhead bins on board WestJet’s aircraft. WestJet is pleased to add an inch of height to accepted dimensions, swapping this for a single inch in width from the existing limits (21” x 15” x 9”) to increase overall stowage capacity and improve cabin comfort and bin functionality—especially on full flights.
“We expect this change will help streamline check-in and boarding times by eliminating the inconsistency between WestJet and several other carriers,” says Colleen Tynan, Vice President of Experience Management. “Introducing a new standard size ensures more bags fit on more flights, so we expect this to have a big impact on the overall experience on board.”
The decision to adopt the new carry-on baggage size comes after years of operating with a size that was unique to WestJet. We’ve heard feedback from WestJet’s guests and employees around maximizing storage capacity across the airline’s various aircraft, which each have bin capacity variances. This includes Sunwing aircraft scheduled to be added to WestJet’s fleet this spring.
New WestJet baggage sizing devices will be delivered by March 13 to all airports where WestJet has service. To offer guests time to adjust to the new carry-on baggage dimensions, WestJet will continue to accept both the current and new maximum baggage sizing until the new maximum officially takes effect on May 6, 2025.
