ATR is thrilled to disclose the signing of a significant contract with Canada’s leading hydroelectricity providerHydro Québec. The agreement includes the purchase of three ATR 72-600, along with an option for additional aircraft, aiming at replacing Hydro Québec’s fleet of older generation turboprops. Deliveries are scheduled to start in September 2026.
With a network of 62 hydroelectric generating stations scattered throughout Québec, Hydro Québec needs an affordable, reliable and low-emission solution to transport its employees across the province. Through this strategic move, Hydro Québec will operate the lowest-emission regional aircraft on the market, with a proven track record in connecting people and places reliably and responsibly in the most challenging environments.
Powered by state-of-the-art PW127XT engines, manufactured by Pratt & Whitney Canada, the ATR 72-600 stands out for its exceptional performance, boasting a remarkable reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to Hydro Québec’s previous generation turboprops, as well as lower operating costs.
“Regional travel is a vital link between the most remote areas and the rest of the world, supporting businesses and providing convenience in the most challenging environments. Hydro Québec’s operations exemplify this reliance on regional connectivity, as they use their aircraft to transport employees across the province, connecting hydroelectric stations that deliver renewable energy not just throughout Québec, but globally – an essential service that communities depend on. By selecting the ATR 72-600, Hydro Québec opts for the lowest-emission regional aircraft on the market, emitting 30% less CO2 than competing turboprops and 45% less than regional jets. This significant advantage underscores their commitment to operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.” said Alexis Vidal, ATR’s Senior Vice-President Commercial.
ATR’s partnership with Hydro Québec highlights the growing momentum for the ATR 72-600 in Canada, after Rise Air became the launch customer of the type in November last year. These brand new aircraft will join a fleet of over 50 ATRs already flying across the country.
Hydro Québec’s order is part of ATR’s undisclosed deals of 2024.
