Airports Council International Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC) is pleased to announce that Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA), in Mexico, has achieved Level 1 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, becoming the 100th airport in Latin America and the Caribbean to join this global initiative.

ACA accreditation is the only independent global certification program that evaluates airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions. Level 1 recognizes that the airport has completed a verified inventory of its emissions, establishing the basis for future reduction actions.

This accreditation marks an important step in AIFA’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action by successfully completing the process of identifying its emission sources and calculating its carbon footprint. As part of the accreditation process, AIFA prepared its Carbon Footprint 2024 report, where both direct and indirect emissions generated by its airport operations were assessed.

In addition to complying with Tier 1 requirements, the airport has begun to implement a number of actions aimed at reducing its environmental impact, including:

  • Improving energy efficiency in its facilities;
  • Using renewable energy, with the operation of three photovoltaic parks;
  • Promoting sustainable practices among its staff and strategic partners.

“We congratulate Felipe Angeles International Airport for obtaining Level 1 accreditation from the ACA program. This achievement reflects its commitment to climate action and responsible environmental management. We are proud to see more airports in the region adopting practices that contribute to a more sustainable future for aviation,” said Dr. Rafael Echevarne, Director General of ACI-LAC.

Through its six levels of certification, the ACA program guides airports on a progressive path towards carbon-free operations. This initiative is part of global efforts to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and move towards more sustainable aviation.
