The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is calling on the various authorities and stakeholders involved in the current security assessment of the Venezuelan airspace to better cooperate and provide clarity to the airlines operating in the Maiquetía Flight Information Region (FIR).

This follows the decision by airlines to suspend flights because of safety advisories issued by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on 21 November 2025 and by Spanish authorities on 24 November 2025, both warning of potential risks to civil aviation and recommending avoiding overflights of afore-mentioned airspace.

IATA emphasizes that these suspensions are temporary measures, adopted after rigorous risk analysis to ensure the safety of passengers, crews and aircraft, in accordance with the international standards established in Annexes 6 and 17 of the Chicago Convention.

Nevertheless, Venezuela’s National Institute of Civil Aeronautics (INAC) announced today that airlines must resume operations within 48 hours under warning of suspension of traffic rights. This decision will further reduce connectivity to the country, which already is one of the least connected in the region.

IATA member airlines remain committed to restoring operations to and from Venezuela as soon as conditions allow and are ready to maintain open channels of communication with the Venezuelan authorities to coordinate actions that guarantee safety, connectivity and the protection of passengers’ rights, in strict compliance with current safety regulations.
