  • The new route is particularly aimed at corporate customers, providing fast access to Manhattan
  • The flight will be operated with the Airbus A321XLR, a key aircraft in the development of Iberia’s Flight Plan 2030

Iberia operated yesterday its first direct flight between Madrid and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), in New York, further strengthening its presence in one of the most strategic markets in North America.

The flight departed from Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport at 19:35 and landed in Newark at 22:25, operated by the Airbus A321XLR, the latest-generation aircraft with which Iberia is transforming transatlantic travel. The airline was the launch operator of this model and already has seven units in its fleet. The A321XLR features the new Airspace cabin, offering larger overhead compartments, LED lighting and an enhanced sense of space, improving the onboard experience. It is configured with two cabins —Business and Economy— with a total of 182 seats.

With the addition of Newark, Iberia will offer three daily flights between Madrid and the New Yorkmetropolitan area —two to JFK Airport and one to Newark— providing customers with greater schedule flexibility and the option to choose the airport that best suits their needs.

In addition, the new Newark service is particularly designed for corporate customers, as it enables fast and direct access to Manhattan’s financial district, reducing travel times for short business trips. New York is also Iberia’s leading corporate market in the United States, further underscoring the importance of this new route.

“The launch of this new route to Newark allows us to continue growing in the United States and, specifically, in New York, a key market for Iberia. With three daily flights, we offer our customers more options and greater flexibility, as well as the possibility of flying to two different airports in New York,” said María Jesús López Solás, Iberia’s Chief Commercial Officer, Network Development and Alliances. “Newark is also a particularly attractive option for corporate customers, as it provides more efficient access to Manhattan. All of this is made possible with the A321XLR, an aircraft that is transforming transatlantic travel and enabling us to continue developing new routes as part of our Flight Plan 2030,” she added.

The launch of this service coincides with the summer season, during which Iberia has scheduled a record capacity between Madrid and New York, with a total of 352,055 seats, 43% more than last year, further strengthening connectivity between the two markets for both business and leisure travel.

More capacity in the United States

For the summer season, which begins on 29 March, Iberia has designed the largest schedule in its history for the United States and Canada. The airline will offer 1,280,254 seats in these markets, 19.02% more than last summer, and operate up to 166 weekly flights, compared to 144 in the previous season, representing a 15% increase in frequencies.

This growth is part of the development of Iberia’s Flight Plan 2030, which continues to drive the airline’s expansion through the incorporation of new aircraft and the launch of strategic destinations. In recent months, Iberia has received six new Airbus A321XLR aircraft, a long-haul model that has strengthened its operations in North America and increased capacity in key markets.

As a result of this expansion, the airline is further strengthening its presence in North America with the launch of Toronto, the addition of a new daily flight to Newark and the first full summer of operations to Orlando, consolidating its commitment to this market as one of the pillars of its long-haul network.
