2024 Flight Cancellation Rate Below Pre-Pandemic Levels Heading into Labor Day Weekend

Source: US DOT The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) shared that the year-to-date flight cancelation rate for 2024 is 1.6% heading into the Labor Day holiday weekend. Despite significant flight disruptions in July brought on by the global CrowdStrike outage, summer storms, and record-breaking air travel volumes, the year-to-date cancelation rate remains below 2022 and pre-pandemic levels. Air travel volumes this summer are the highest on record. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has already screened 239.8 million people since Memorial Day weekend, which is an average of 2.7 million per day. The top ten busiest travel days in the agency’s history have all occurred this year since May 2024, and a new milestone was reached on July 7, when more than 3 [...]

Grants Help Fast Track Travelers With Their Luggage

Source: FAA To date the FAA has awarded over 25 airports with more than $465 million in grant funding for the replacement or upgrading of baggage handling systems. This unique funding program was made possible by President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and gives airports the opportunity to make improvements and modernize facilities for a more efficient passenger experience at a moment when some systems are 30 years old and nearing the end of their usefulness. For example, the Denver International Airport in Colorado was recently awarded $124 million to replace the baggage handling system with a more energy efficient system to accommodate additional passengers. With record air travel this month and passenger growth predicted for years to come, the Biden-Harris [...]

IATA: Strong Air Cargo Demand Growth Extends into July

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for July 2024 global air cargo markets showing continuing strong annual growth in demand. Total demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTKs*), rose by 13.6% compared to July 2023 levels (14.3% for international operations). This is the eighth consecutive month of double-digit year-on-year growth, with overall levels reaching heights not seen since the record peaks of 2021. Capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometers (ACTKs), increased by 8.3% compared to July 2023 (10.1% for international operations). This was largely related to the growth in international belly capacity, which rose 12.8% on the strength of passenger markets and balancing the 6.9% growth of international freighter capacity. It should be noted that the increase [...]

Barni of San Francisco International Airport voted TSA’s Cutest Canine of 2024

Source: TSA Barni, a 5-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer, an explosives detection canine at San Francisco International Airport, is the winner of the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) 2024 Cutest Canine Contest. Last week, TSA held its annual nationwide social media contest on Instagram, X (formerly known as Twitter) and Facebook, where the public voted for the agency's "cutest canine" from among four finalists. TSA canine handlers from airports and enforcement handlers across the country initially nominated the canine candidates. TSA employees then voted and narrowed the original field of 87 paws-itively cute contenders to the final four canines, all of whom deserve a round of a-paws. "Our explosives detection canines and their handlers are an essential component of TSA's multi-layered approach [...]

FAA Proposed $341,413 in Civil Penalties Against Drone Operations

Source: FAA The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) proposed $341,413 in civil penalties against 27 people who violated federal drone regulations. The FAA issued the fines between October 2022 and June 2024. Drone operators who conduct unsafe or unauthorized operations face fines up to $75,000 per violation, an increase included in the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024. The FAA also can suspend or revoke drone operators’ pilot certificates. “Violating the drone regulations puts lives at risk in the air and on the ground,” said FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker. “Flying a small drone means you are flying an aircraft, and unsafe behavior will cost you.” The FAA encourages people to report unsafe and unauthorized drone operations to their local Flight Standards District Office. The [...]
