ICAO pilot project provides airlines, airports and other air transport partners with improved capabilities to authenticate travel and health documents

Source: ICAO A new ICAO pilot project is helping airlines, airports, and other air transport partners to test and leverage the capability to authenticate travel documents and related health certificates, including official proofs of vaccination. The limited-time pilot project trial is providing the private sector partners with enhanced opportunities to make use of the data in ICAO’s Public Key Directory (PKD), a critical backbone supporting the security and efficiency of international mobility. PKD data supports the international system of asymmetric cryptography employed by States to secure documents such as electronic passports, and importantly it contains no personal information about the travel document or health proof holders. “The ICAO PKD has always been a valuable tool for countries to enhance border [...]

Since its launch in 2017, the system now covers 542 air traffic facilities serving approximately 735 airports. In February, the FAA issued its millionth airspace authorization through LAANC. LAANC does not grant Service Suppliers the authority to regulate the airspace or grant access without FAA approval. The schedule [...]

Air Cargo Growth Continues in January but at a Slower Pace

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for global air cargo markets showing slower growth in January 2022. Supply chain disruptions and capacity constraints, as well as a deterioration in economic conditions for the sector dampened demand. Note: We are returning to year-on-year traffic comparisons, instead of comparisons with the 2019 period, unless otherwise noted. Cargo demand is tracking above pre-COVID-19 levels, although capacity is still constrained. Global demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTKs*), was up 2.7% compared to January 2021 (3.2% for international operations). This was significantly lower than the 9.3% growth seen in December 2021 (11.1% for international operations). Capacity was 11.4% above January 2021 (10.8% for international operations). While this is in positive territory, [...]

Source: FAA The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed a $175,500 civil penalty against Airtronics in Watkins, Colorado, for allegedly conducting unapproved maintenance operations. The FAA alleges that Airtronics performed maintenance on approximately 20 aircraft between Aug. 15, 2019, and Nov. 20, 2020. Joint FAA and United Kingdom CAA Statement on eVTOL Aircrafts

Sources: FAA/UK-CAA  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority recognize the potential of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) and other Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) aircraft to significantly benefit the public. To support future eVTOL aircraft development and operation, the US and UK civil aviation authorities are engaged in a range of bilateral and multilateral discussions focused on facilitating certification and validating new eVTOL aircraft, production, continued airworthiness, operations, and personnel licensing. As these aircraft enter into the aviation ecosystem, we must continue to maintain the high safety standards that the public expects. To streamline and expedite integration, this technology should use existing regulatory frameworks on which that strong safety record is founded. Both regulators recognize AAM is a [...]

EASA Launches European Information Sharing and Cooperation Platform on Conflict Zones

Source: EASA The European Union Aviation Safety Agency launched the European Information Sharing and Cooperation Platform on Conflict Zones, an initiative which ensures that participating EASA member states and their operators have easy access to the best information when planning flights near or over areas of conflict. The launch of the platform, developed together with Osprey Flight Solutions, is the latest operational step in Europe’s multi-layered strategy to improve conflict zone information sharing. This was initiated in response to the tragic shooting down of MH17 over eastern Ukraine in July 2014 and its momentum reinforced by the loss of UA752, shot down over Tehran in January 2020. The aim of the Platform is to enable its members to carry out [...]
