Strong Demand Recovery in January but Impacted by Omicron

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that the recovery in air travel slowed for both domestic and international in January 2022 compared to December 2021, owing to the imposition of travel restrictions following the emergence of Omicron last November. Total demand for air travel in January 2022 (measured in revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) was up 82.3% compared to January 2021. However, it was down 4.9% [...]

ICAO pilot project provides airlines, airports and other air transport partners with improved capabilities to authenticate travel and health documents

Source: ICAO A new ICAO pilot project is helping airlines, airports, and other air transport partners to test and leverage the capability to authenticate travel documents and related health certificates, including official proofs of vaccination. The limited-time pilot project trial is providing the private sector partners with enhanced opportunities to make use of the data in ICAO’s Public Key Directory (PKD), a critical backbone supporting the security and efficiency of international mobility. PKD data supports the international system of asymmetric cryptography employed by States to secure documents such as electronic passports, and importantly it contains no personal information about the travel document or health proof holders. “The ICAO PKD has always been a valuable tool for countries to enhance border [...]

Cargo demand is tracking above pre-COVID-19 levels, although capacity is still constrained. Global demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTKs*), was up 2.7% compared to January 2021 (3.2% for international operations). This was significantly lower than the 9.3% growth seen in December 2021 (11.1% for international operations). Capacity was 11.4% above January 2021 (10.8% for international operations). While this is in positive territory, [...]
