ALTA highlights the achievements and challenges of aviation on its international day

Source: ALTA The Association reinforces the importance of the airline industry as a driver of connectivity and promoter of economic development, highlighting its vast potential in Latin America and the Caribbean “Aviation is the safest and most efficient means to transport life, to carry vaccines, organs, essential supplies to where and when they are needed. It is the most efficient means to transport food, merchandise and perishable goods that would otherwise arrive too late when they are already spoiled. Sometimes it is the only way to get people to remote places where there is no other means of transport. We do not have roads connecting countries as in other regions; we have over 700 islands throughout the Caribbean that need [...]

IATA Expanding Operational Data Analytics Capabilities

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that insights from enhancing the analytical capabilities of the IATA Global Aviation Data Management (GADM) program are powering informed decisions to improve safety, operational efficiency and sustainability. The new capabilities take advantage of advancements in big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence. GADM's data comes from several sources, including the Incident Data Exchange (IDX)  and the Flight Data eXchange (FDX) programs. The latter now comprises data from 15 million flights performed by 7,500 aircraft.  The FDX data captured from each flight monitors hundreds of parameters per second, thus making GADM the most authoritative and comprehensive collection of global aviation operational data in the world. Currently 198 airlines contribute data to GADM, [...]

Air Cargo Demand up 3.8% in October

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for October 2023 global air cargo markets indicating the third consecutive month of stronger year-on-year demand. Global demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs*), increased by 3.8% compared to October 2022. For international operations, the demand lagged slightly at 3.5%. Capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometres (ACTKs), was up 13.1% compared to October 2022 (11.1% for international operations). This was largely related to the growth in belly capacity. International belly capacity, for example, rose 30.5% year-on-year on the strength of passenger markets. Several factors in the operating environment should be noted: Economic activities slowed in October. With the Purchasing Managers’ Index for manufacturing output and export orders for major economies (excluding [...]

FAA Proposes Requiring 25-Hour Cockpit Voice Recorders

Source: FAA The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing to extend the cockpit voice-recording requirement to 25 hours for all newly manufactured aircraft. The voice recorder captures all transmissions and sounds in the cockpit, including the pilots’ voices and engine noises. “This rule will give us substantially more data to identify the causes of incidents and help prevent them in the future,” said FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker. The FAA pledged to take action on the issue following the Safety Summit in March 2023 during which more than 200 safety leaders met to discuss ways to enhance flight safety. This rule would align with regulations set by the International Civil Aviation Organization and European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Current FAA regulations require voice recorders [...]
