Despite the ongoing pandemic, Austrian Airlines’ flight offer was in high demand over the recent holiday season period. The warm weather destinations in the red-white-red airline’s destination portfolio were particularly popular. The long-haul connections to Cancún, Mauritius and Malé, which had already been topped up with additional flights, were almost fully booked with an average occupancy of around 85%. In total, Austrian Airlines flew over 360,000 passengers during the holiday season from 17 December to 10 January. Driving factors for the intense air traffic were family and relatives visits and passengers’ longing for vacation time with beach and sun. Austrian Airlines flights to North America, within the DACH region and to Eastern Europe were widely popular, with a large number of passengers also using Vienna Airport as a transfer point for connecting flight within the airline’s route network.

The most popular long-haul flights from Vienna during the holiday season were the routes to Cancun, Male and Washington. Regarding continental connections, particularly flights to Ukraine and Russia were highly demanded. Due to the great popularity of the youngest of Austrian Airlines’ long-haul destinations, Cancún, the additional third weekly connection to the Mexican Caribbean will be continued from the end of January for the rest of the winter flight schedule.
