U.S. Scheduled Passenger Airlines Employ an Estimated 0.5% More Employees in October 2021 than in September and 8.7% Fewer than in Pre-Pandemic October 2019

Source: US DOT The 24 U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed an estimated 412,844 full-time equivalents (FTEs) in October 2021, an increase of 0.5% (2,008 FTEs) from September 2021 (410,836 FTEs). October’s total was down 39,508 FTEs or 8.7% from pre-pandemic October 2019 (452,352 FTEs). NOTE: This data is estimated because one major passenger carrier has not yet reported its October employment. BTS has imputed data for that carrier based on a 5-month moving average of its full- and part-time employees. The increase from September resulted largely from Delta Airlines adding 2,701 FTEs, an increase tempered by American Airlines reducing employment by 462 FTEs. Other notable changes include near across-the-board employment reductions among regional airlines (down 446 FTEs) from September to [...]

Statement on the Announcement of New EU Slot Use Rules for Summer 2022

Source: IATA IATA thanks the European Commission for providing confirmation of the slot rules for next summer in good time, resisting calls to fully switch the pre-pandemic slot rules back on. The extended slot alleviation provides certainty of the rules when the demand environment remains unpredictable, allowing airlines to build sustainable schedules that respond to demand. IATA particularly appreciated the Commission’s openness to discuss technical aspects of the proposal, which led to the choice of a slot use threshold that can be practicably implemented by airlines in terms of schedules and slot planning. We hope that as soon as possible, governments restore travel rules that allow for the industry to return to growth again. Until demand growth stabilizes, it is [...]

In Favour of Market-Specific Approaches to Slot Allocation for Summer 2022

Source: ACI Despite the pandemic, the most constrained airports are already effectively saturated at peak times, and slots at these airports will remain scarce. An additional complexity is that recovery is likely to be uneven as regions face different conditions from each other. ACI World projects that worldwide passenger traffic by the end of next year will reach 6.6 billion, up from 4.6 billion in 2021. Despite the pandemic, the most constrained airports are already effectively saturated at peak times, and slots at these airports will remain scarce. An additional complexity is that recovery is likely to be uneven as regions face different conditions from each other.
